Jaco, Jaco Costa Rica, Playa Jaco, Playa Jaco Costa Rica, Jaco Info, Jaco Vacation, Jaco Holiday, Vacation Jaco, Jaco Beach, Jaco Beach Costa RicaPlaya Jaco (or Jacó as it’s correctly written in Spanish) is one of the most popular destinations in all of Costa Rica, for both tourists and locals. Here are some basic facts about the best little beach community in Costa Rica!

Where:

Jacó is in Puntarenas province near the Gulf of Nicoya on the western – or Pacific Ocean – side of Costa Rica. Jacó is a beach community that lies between several mountain ranges, about 73km from the famous volcano Arenal, 116 km from the northwestern city of Liberia, 114km from Manuel Antonio, and about 100 km from the capital city of San Jose.

Climate:

The weather in Jacó is perpetually tropical, with average high temps around 90-95 °F, and humidity reaching 80-90%. , Jacó like the rest of Costa Rica, does not have four seasons like in North America or Europe, but only two: dry and rainy. The rainy seasons runs from May to about mid-November, with the heaviest of rains coming in September and October, when it can rain 20 days out of the month! But don’t be scared off by the rainy season, as it’s also the time when the plant life is the most lush and green and it usually rains in the afternoon and night, leaving plenty of sunlight.

Getting there:

Its close proximity to San Jose is one of the biggest reasons why Playa Jacó is so popular with locals (Ticos) and tourists alike. Only about 100km from the city, it takes less than 2 hours to drive into the capital on Route 34, or only about 1 1/2 hours to get to the largest airport in the country, Juan Santamaría International, via routes 34 and 27. Buses, shuttles, taxis, and rental cars run to and from Jacó literally any time of day or night.

Playa Jacó is a 2.5 mile (4 km) strip of dark sand and clear water that is world famous among surfers and sun worshippers. The intersecting estuary from Rio Tarcoles keeps much of the flora around Jacó lush and green throughout the year. Ocean lovers also travel a quick 4.4 miles to the north to tranquil Playa Herradura or 6 miles south to Playa Hermosa.

History:

Cost Rica’s modern history started when Columbus inadvertently landed on the country’s shores in 1502, with a large number of European settlers arriving sixty years later with a thirst for gold. Like in much of the Americas, this meant the end for many of the indigenous tribes and ways of life, and Spain eventually colonized the area. In the 1800s, coffee growing became a booming industry that both bolstered the economy, improved infrastructure, and set up an exchange of ideas with European trading partners that brought social reforms. The coastal area around Playa Jacó was still mostly inhabited by small farmers, fisherman, and some ranchers, with few roads even connecting it to the capital, well into the late 1900s, when tourism started taking off.
